Historical background to the document "The speech of the President of the Azerbaijan Republic Heydar Aliyev at the ceremony of inauguration of Yenikend Hydroelectric power station (May 23, 2000)"

The decision on the construction of Yenikand Hydroelectric Station was adopted by Heydar Aliyev in 1979. The construction started in 1984, but was fully stopped in 1988-1992.

The first major investment after the declaration of independence was made in energy sector - in the construction of Yenikand Hydroelectric Station. Thus, the construction resumed in 1996 thanks to the investment from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. Four years later - on May 23, 2000, the station was put into operation in the presence of Heydar Aliyev. Then, three hydro-units each with 37.5 MW capacity were put into operation. The fourth unit was also put into operation in 2003, thus increasing the total capacity to 150 MW.
