Historical background to the document "From the conversation of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev at the tete-a-tete meeting with His Majesty Emperor of Japan Akihito (the Imperial Palace, February 25, 1998)"


The official visit of Heydar Aliyev to Japan on February 23-28 was very rich from the point of view of the arranged meetings and signed documents. The President hold forty-seven negotiations with the government bodies and businesmen, five important documents were signed.

Especially the joint statement “On friendship and partnership between Japan and Azerbaijan” and “On cooperation in the sphere of trade and economy between Japan and Azerbaijan” signed by the prime minister of Japan Hashimoto and President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev acquire great importance. On February 25, 1998, Heydar Aliyev met the Emperor of Japan His Majesty Akihito and they discussed the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh and the Azerbaijani-Japanese economic relations.
