From the talk of President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev with the head of the delegation of the Canadian "Alberta Energy" Company, Don Stacy - 27 July, 2000

Heydar Aliyev: You are our old friend. Therefore I am very pleased to see You in Azerbaijan again. In 1994, we created the "Contract of the Century" together with you. And now we have good outcomes.

Don Stacy: It is true.

Heydar Aliyev: Now You are in Canada. Whereas You moved to Canada, we started to cooperate with this country.

Don Stacy: Wonderful.

Heydar Aliyev: However, what if You leave for Brazil later, in that case, we are to have to establish contacts with Brazil, too.

Don Stacy: Mr. President, I fulfill the work You charged me with some years ago. It implies to bring many foreigners to Azerbaijan.

Heydar Aliyev: Thank You very much.

Don Stacy: Mr. President, I express my gratitude for receiving us again. I am very pleased to meet You.

Mr. President, I have to tell You that You look wonderful. I am looking at You and thinking, perhaps it would be good if I underwent a surgical operation in my heart too.

Heydar Aliyev: No, if there is no necessity, You do not need it. You look good too. You have not changed at all.

Don Stacy: Mr. President, I remember our last meeting. It was in 1994. Then You were in Houston, in Texas. You were in Houston, I lived there then and now I still live in that city. Then we met at the supper. During that supper You informed about the birth of Your grandson - little Heydar.

Heydar Aliyev: It was not in 1994, but in 1997.

Don Stacy: I hope You had an opportunity to spend a good time with Your grandson, because I also like to bring up my grandson. I am sure You enjoy it.

Heydar Aliyev: I know, You told me You have 6 grandsons. Am I right?

Don Stacy: When I was telling You about that, I had 6 grandsons. However my children "work very fruitfully": now I have 9 grandsons.

Heydar Aliyev: But my children lag behind Yours. I have 6 grandsons.

Don Stacy: That is true, but You have grandsons of high-quality.

Heydar Aliyev: Of course. My grandson was born during my stay in Houston, he came into the world on 2 August, 1997. In some days, he will be 3.

Don Stacy: I wish him good health and I am sure that his upbringing gives You special pleasure.

Heydar Aliyev: Thank You.

Don Stacy: When we last met, I worked in "AMOCO". But now there is no "AMOCO" any longer. The world has changed, and there is no "ARCO", no "MOBIL", no others.

Heydar Aliyev: When Your retired, "AMOCO" collapsed.

Don Stacy: You have fully expressed my thoughts. I want to mention with deep satisfaction that when I arrived yesterday at the Baku airport, I made sure once again that only positive transformations had taken place in Azerbaijan. The progress under Your leadership is evident.

I want to inform You that when the Canadian "Alberta Energy" was working up its plans on international operations and thinking about what countries to put investment in, I unambiguously recommended them to go to Azerbaijan. They asked why exactly to Azerbaijan? I answered that the President of that country is my friend, Heydar Aliyev. I told them - you would not find the second state where 10 production-sharing contracts were concluded within five years. I told them that Azerbaijan under the leadership of President Heydar Aliyev is a good space for investment, and capital should be invested in this country.

Owing to the decisions passed by You some years ago, the welfare of the Azerbaijani people are improving now, the economic development of your country is also advancing.

Distinguished President, at present, I am the citizen of both the USA and Canada. Now I work in the capacity of the chairman of the Canadian "Alberta Energy". As You know, our company has a 5 percent share in "Alov" oil deposit. However we intend to make new investments in Azerbaijan in the sum exceeding this.

I want to briefly inform You about the "Alberta Energy" Company. Our company is the biggest independent Canadian company. Annual turnover of our company is 6 billion dollars. We produce 30 thousand tons of oil daily.

Our company is producing the biggest quantity of natural gas in Canada. We also export much gas to the USA.

"Alberta Energy" is the largest company operating pipelines in Canada. Therefore I have brought with me the president and vice-president of the "Alberta Energy" Company responsible for production. I have to tell You that once he climbed to the top of Mount Everest and he will also share his thoughts with You.

Mr. President, I also brought with me our common friend, Zohrab Subhani. Doctor Zohrab Subhani will help us to achieve the development of the Azerbaijani-Canadian contacts. I have to note that recently, Doctor Subhani made a report in the Canadian parliament in the hearings devoted to Azerbaijan and its significance.

Mr. President, I want to state that I remain faithful to the friendship with You and Azerbaijan, and as the chairman of the Canadian "Alberta Energy", I will do my utmost, so that we could reach further development of the Azerbaijani-Canadian relations through the assistance of this company.

I also want to uniform that this cooperation started with our invitation sent to Mr. Ilham Aliyev. We invited Mr. Ilham Aliyev to visit Canada, hold talks with the official circles of the country, officials representing energy sector.

Mr. President, I express You my gratitude once again for the hospitality shown to me, I appreciate You for receiving us.

Heydar Aliyev: Thank You. My esteemed friend, I say again that I am pleased to see You in Azerbaijan. It is true that we laid the basis of the big oil contract in 1994. The USA "AMOCO" headed by You then showed really great interest in Azerbaijan, it was one of the first companies to arrive in Azerbaijan, 19 contracts have been signed so far, 32 oil companies work in Azerbaijan representing the interests of 14 countries. One of them is the Canadian "Alberta Energy".

Our past cooperation with You was very frank. Therefore, I am ready to cooperate with You henceforce. The cooperation with such a large state as Canada is naturally of essential significance. And You, Mr. Don Stacy, play the basic role in this issue.

Good cooperation needs trust. And firm trust has been established between us. I accept with satisfaction Your proposals about the forthcoming work of your Canadian company in Azerbaijan, and I will take necessary measures for their implementation.

I am grateful to You for the kind words about the positive changes You witnessed in Azerbaijan. And now, if You have definite proposals, we can discuss them.
