Statement of the President of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev. February 4, 1998

We pursued worriedly the situation created in Armenia in last days. In connection to the events - the resignation of the Armenian president Levon Ter-Petrosyan, I declare that Azerbaijan has supported the peace settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Mountainous Garabagh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict and I notify once more that today Azerbaijan supports the peace settlement of the problem as well.

I consider the cease-fire agreement in the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict achieved in May, 1994 as a great success. The cease-fire regime has been preserved for the last years as a result of the joint efforts of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Today I declare that Azerbaijan will provide preserving the cease-fire regime today and in future.

I hope that Armenia`s domestic questions will be solved soon and the process of peace settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani Mountainous Garabagh (Nagorno-Karabakh) conflict will proceed on the basis of the principles adopted at the OSCE Lisbon Summit. We think that the OSCE Minsk group, the Minsk group co-chairmen have done quite a lot of work for the peace settlement of the conflict. I believe that the peace negotiations between Armenia and Azerbaijan will continue with the participation and mediation of the Minsk group co-chairmen - Russia, the United States of America and France and we will achieve the great peace in future.
