Historical background to the document "From the speech of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev at the VI Summit of the Turkic speaking countries (Baku, Gulustan Palace, April 8, 2000)"


Summits of the Turkic-speaking countries founded in 1992 in Ankara, capital of the Republic of Turkey, serve the goal of strengthening and developing the friendship and close cooperation among the fraternal nations.

On April 8, 2000, Baku hosted the VI summit of the Turkic-speaking countries. It was attended by H. Aliyev, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan N. Nazarbayev, President of the Kyrgyz Republic A. Akayev, President of the Republic of Turkey S. Demirel, chairman of the Parliament of Turkmenistan S. Muradov and chairman of the Supreme Assembly of the Republic of Uzbekistan E. Khalilov. The leaders noted with satisfaction the importance of the Baku summit and stressed the significance of the further development and of multilateral and bilateral cooperation in various fields, as well as close integration in the frames of international organizations.

The Baku Declaration was adopted according to the results of the VI Summit.
