Speech of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev in the Azerbaijani embassy in Brussels - April 23, 1996

With the establishment of our statehood, Azerbaijan establishes diplomatic relations with foreign countries and our embassies start operating in various countries for making these relations effective. This process is underway. We have opened our embassies in a number of countries in the last two years. One of them is the Azerbaijani embassy to Belgium.

We pay special attention to this embassy as Brussels is the center of many international organizations, including the European Union, NATO. At present, we closely cooperate with the EU and NATO. Therefore, this embassy should serve this cooperation. At the same time, it is very useful and important for the bilateral relations between Azerbaijan and Belgium.

I think that the staff of the embassy has done a lot here within a short time. The building has been rented, necessary conditions have been created for the staff. I appreciate it. I see that all the personnel of the embassy, the representatives of Azerbaijan are young. It gladdens me. There are both male and female employees. This is also great. I think that this staff can work in this favorable environment.

I congratulate you on the occasion of this new building of the embassy of Azerbaijan. I wish you successes in your activities. I am sure that you will win honor and fame for Azerbaijan in Belgium and adjacent countries. It is your task and duty. I hope that you realize your task and duty and will implement it properly.
